BETWEEN WORLDS: BEHIND THE SCENES (CHAPTER 15)
Taking a look back at Chapter 15
This is my favorite chapter to date. While each chapter has some of my favorite moments, and I enjoy seeing Azeil's journey, it's when he completely distances himself from basketball and opens himself up to someone else that the story does some heavy lifting, and this is one of those chapters.
There is no basketball in Azeil’s hands. Instead, there is a camera, and he gets back into a hobby that he thoroughly enjoyed with his mother. It’s hard to convey the importance of this, of being able to go back to something that was uniquely just his and his mother's, and embracing it again.
Basketball was one of those things, but he had teammates and a coach with whom he shared that experience. He shared this part of himself with no one else, and having someone he could do that with (Nia) helps open up another part of himself that he has been closed off since his mother’s passing.
In addition, we’d stepped away from the Azeil and Nia relationship for a bit so we could focus on some other areas, and being able to come back to this was a ton of fun, personally. You continue to see these two confide in each other, be there for one another, and build deeper connections that aren’t just focused on physical attraction or surface-level. These two are truly finding one another at a time when they both need one another, and that trust is critical, especially for Azeil. We see that continue when Azeil is at her house and meeting her family, this family that he wouldn’t know if it wasn’t for his mother’s passing.
As bittersweet as it all is, it gives Azeil hope and confidence as he moves forward. The kiss at the end of the chapter is a first for both, and it’s full of life and passion, the things that most feel at the outset of any relationship. It’s truly something else to see these two come to that point after chapters (and lots of words) getting to this point, but it’s one that came together beautifully in my eyes.
